In times of polarization, confusion, and intolerance, what can we do to make sense of ourselves and humanity's actions? Perhaps part of the answer lies in our dreams. Sigmund Freud described dreams as the "royal road to the unconscious.” CG Jung expanded on Freud’s theories to show that dreams also grant us access to the storehouse of ancestral knowledge in the collective unconscious. When we study the allegorical and symbolic language by which dreams express themselves, we learn to communicate not only with our own shadow, but also with the vast number of archetypal symbols that represent facets of our deeply complex psyche. Through dreams, we learn—so to say—about our own backside: that which compels us to project our own complexes onto others.
